Fort Myers is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, Florida. The population was 48,208 at the 2000 census. The city is one of two major cities that make up the Cape Coral-Fort Myers MSA, the other being Cape Coral.

Established in 1886, Fort Myers is the historical and governmental hub of Lee County. It is the gateway to the Southwest Florida region, which is a major tourist destination in Florida, as well as being a popular place to live for retirees. The winter homes of Thomas Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Henry Ford (The Mangoes), which are both primary tourist attractions in the region, are located on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.

The Edison and Ford Winter Estates contain a historical museum and 17 acre (6.9 hectares) botanical garden on the adjacent sites of the winter homes of Thomas Alva Edison and Henry Ford beside the Caloosahatchee River in southwestern Florida. It is located at 2350 McGregor Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida, USA.

The city is the home of the Fort Myers Miracle baseball club of the Florida State League, and is the spring training locale for the Boston Red Sox. The Minnesota Twins hold their spring training in suburban South Fort Myers.

The City is proud to own and maintain top rated and professionally designed golf courses. The two (2) par 72 courses attract avid golfers from all regions of the country. While one course offers a beautiful tranquil setting mixed with a long and challenging field of play, the other course boasts a Donald Ross design which challenges the game's best on a timeless and traditional-styled course. With amenities such as a Restaurant, Pro Shops, Practice facilities and Instruction, Fort Myers' Golf Courses are an excellent way to spend your day in Southwest Florida.

The Southwest Florida Museum of History is located at 2300 Peck Street just one block south of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in historic downtown Ft. Myers. Housed in the former Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot, the Museum is home to the history of Southwest Florida. Paleo Indians, the Calusa, the Seminoles, Spanish explorers, and early settlers are just a few of the people you will meet as you view the exhibits. An authentic replica of a pioneer "cracker" house, a 1926 La France fire pumper, and a 1929 private Pullman rail car are also part of the tour.

Located at Mile Marker 135 on the Okeechobee Waterway, 15 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, Fort Myers Yacht Basin is a well designed and protected marina. It is owned and operated by the City of Fort Myers. There is 10 feet of water in the ICW and an average of 6 feet of water at the docks. The docks are in good condition and the staff is competent, professional, friendly and helpful. The marina is located in historic downtown Fort Myers. Many restaurants and historical sites are nearby and worthy of a visit. Many festivals and other family oriented activities frequently are held at Centennial Park located next to the Marina. The marina has the distinction of being the friendliest on the waterway. You will find its prices for both fuel and dockage to be very competitive.

Stately Royal Palms line the shaded boulevards along the wide Caloosahatchee River. Crimson bouganvillea, lavender jacaranda and sweet-scented hibiscus dot city parks. Flavor this vision with colorful sailboats in the sunset and fresh-off-the-dock seafood, and you have just a taste of Southwest Florida paradise.
